3-Line TL;DR
- In the first weekend after the Oct 23 launch, about ten photos showed iPhone Duo screens cracked along the fold
- Assembly worries like gaps and creaks rest on a few photos, and nobody knows the real defect rate
- The Duo gets a lot right, but on long-term foldable durability, Galaxy's earlier trial and error is still an edge (author's opinion)
What defects have been reported?
- Apple's first foldable launched Oct 23 in markets including South Korea, starting at $1,999 in the US (Apple Newsroom)
- As a market example, the 256GB model costs ₩3.29 million in South Korea
- The biggest issue is cracking: a line along the fold with a band of white pixels beside it (9to5Mac)
- 9to5Mac had seen about ten unique cases by Oct 25, all looking almost identical
- One Australian buyer says the screen cracked after about six hours and fewer than 20 folds (Reddit)
- Several owners describe the hinge tightening and then a pop just before the crack
- On the other hand, seven Genius Bars that AppleInsider asked saw only one such repair over two days (AppleInsider)
- Some posts call the assembly odd: a gap when closed, hinge alignment, creaking (Reddit)
- These are one or two photos or videos each, with no measurements or official ruling yet

Made by HSL from 9to5Mac, AppleInsider, the iFixit teardown, coverage of the JerryRigEverything test and r/iPhoneDuo posts
- In JerryRigEverything's test, the inner screen scratched at Mohs level 2 (MacRumors)
- After dust went in, the hinge stopped closing fully, and a reverse bend left a green line and a dead inner screen
- You can watch the screen actually fail in JerryRigEverything's original video

- The matte film has only drawn worries that it might peel on its own; no one has reported it actually peeling
What does Apple say?
- Most owners who went to an Apple Store got a new unit on the spot (9to5Mac)
- Carrier stores told some buyers to wait for stock, and one case was judged a drop
- Apple has announced no cause and no replacement program yet
- It did publish a hinge troubleshooting document on launch day (Apple Support)

Source: Apple Support 148323, our own capture of the original text; red outlines added by HSL
- It says there's no software fix for hinge issues, and the whole inner display assembly gets replaced if checks fail
- From teardown and CT scans, iFixit sees the cracks gathering at the edge of the hinge support structure (iFixit)
- It suggests the center support may not drop far enough, but calls that a possibility, not a verdict
- Korean YouTuber CuriousHagi took apart a cracked Duo and found a hinge part sheared right where the crack began (video in Korean)
- An impact mark under the display suggests the broken piece hit it, though this is one unit (AppleInsider)

- Out of warranty, the bill is steep: an inner screen is reported at $999 (iFixit)

Made by HSL from iFixit's price report and Samsung's US repair prices, before tax
- With AppleCare+, an inner-screen claim costs $99 (AppleCare fees)
- As a market example, South Korean reports put an out-of-warranty inner screen at ₩1.649 million vs ₩774,000 for the Fold8 (Newsis)

The piggy bank fainted at $999
- In South Korea, iPhones also carry a two-year manufacturing-defect warranty (Apple Korea)
The Duo still gets a lot right
- iFixit gives it a provisional 5/10 for repairability, the best of any foldable; the Fold8 got 4/10 (iFixit)
- In the same fluorescent powder test, less powder got into its hinge than into the Fold8's
- It's rated IP68 for water and dust, above the Fold8's IP48 (Apple Newsroom)
- Reviewer Joanna Stern folded it more than 32,000 times by machine, and only the hinge got a little stiffer (MacRumors)
- One hands-on found the crease visible in some light but better hidden than Samsung's (MacRumors)
| iPhone Duo | Galaxy Z Fold8 | |
|---|---|---|
| Water and dust | IP68 | IP48 (no protection from dust under 1mm) |
| Inner screen scratches | Mohs 2 | Mohs 2 |
| Bend test (JRE) | Inner screen died | Passed (Ultra broke) |
| iFixit repairability (provisional) | 5/10 | 4/10 |
| US out-of-warranty inner screen | $999 (reported) | $419–$579 |
| Published fold durability | None | 500,000 folds (Fold7 panel test) |

Galaxy has been here before
- Samsung delayed the first Galaxy Fold in 2019 after review units' screens broke (Samsung Newsroom)
- It blamed impacts at the hinge's top and bottom gaps and debris getting inside
- In July it said it had tucked the protective layer under the bezel, added hinge caps and narrowed gaps (Samsung Newsroom)
- The fixed Fold went on sale on Sep 6, starting in South Korea

Made by HSL from Samsung Newsroom, Bureau Veritas, Apple Newsroom and iFixit
-
The Duo's suspected hinge gaps and debris look a lot like what Samsung went through in 2019
-
Samsung isn't flawless either: a Fold8 crack case and a warranty dispute surfaced soon after launch (Sammy Fans)
-
Still, seven years of refining hinges, protective layers and repair systems counts for a lot
-
The Duo clearly has real strengths in repairability, water resistance and the crease
-
But on durability over years of folding, I think Galaxy, with far more foldable experience, still has the edge (author's opinion)
Community Reactions

- Duo owner u/Background_Handle241 asks whether apparent hinge misalignment after two days is normal (no measurements) (Reddit)
- Duo owner u/odaboi_ reports that their launch-day 512GB Star White unit works normally without cracks (Reddit)

Q&A (Field Notes)
- Q. Should I buy a Duo now?
- The defect rate is still unknown. If you buy, fold it often in the first two weeks and keep the return window and AppleCare+ in mind
- Q. Will Apple replace a cracked screen for free?
- Apple Stores mostly swapped units on the spot, but there's no official free program, and a drop verdict means you pay
- Q. Can I peel off the matte film?
- Apple says not to. The crease shows more without it, and a US replacement is reported at $49
- Q. Does the Fold8 avoid these problems?
- The Fold8 has early failure posts too, and the Ultra broke in a bend test, but it builds on fixes since 2019
