3-Line TL;DR

  • Apple's first foldable, the iPhone Duo, starts at $1,999 in the US, with preorders on October 16 and sales on October 23
  • It is heavier and thicker than the Galaxy Z Fold8 and costs $100 more, but it runs the same A20 Pro as the iPhone 18 Pro
  • I use a Galaxy Fold and will stay with Samsung, but if I did not live in Korea I would probably have bought the Duo

Only $100 more than the Fold8 in the US

Price chart: in the US the iPhone Duo is $1,999 vs $1,899.99 for the Galaxy Z Fold8; in Korea the Duo costs 1.44 times the Fold8

Source: Apple US store, Samsung US, Apple Korea store, Fold8 Korean launch price report; checked October 15, 2026

  • The Duo starts at $1,999 for 256GB and tops out at $3,199 for 2TB (Apple)
  • That is $800 more than the iPhone 18 Pro, which starts at $1,199 (Apple)
  • The Galaxy Z Fold8 starts at $1,899.99, so the gap with the Duo is just $99.01
  • At that point the Duo stops looking like a luxury toy and starts looking like a normal foldable price
  • Korea is a different story: Apple asks ₩3,290,000 for the 256GB Duo, while Samsung launched the Fold8 at ₩2,278,100
  • So in Korea the Duo costs 1.44 times the Fold8, roughly a million won more
  • Samsung's home market gets its phones at a friendlier price, which is the main reason I am staying with the Fold

Same chip as the iPhone 18 Pro, with a vapor chamber

Benchmark chart: A20 Pro leads Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 in Geekbench 6 single- and multi-core and in 3DMark stability, 80% vs 25%

Source: Beebom tests on an iPhone 18 Pro Max and an iQOO 15, updated September 29, 2026

  • The Duo uses the A20 Pro, the same chip as the iPhone 18 Pro (Apple specs)
  • The Fold8 runs the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 (Samsung)
  • In Beebom's tests, the A20 Pro scored about 31% higher in Geekbench 6 single-core and about 23% higher in multi-core
  • The bigger gap is in 3DMark stability, which compares the slowest of 20 GPU loops with the fastest
  • The A20 Pro kept 80% of its speed, while the Snapdragon phone kept 25%
  • Those scores came from other phones, so treat them as a chip comparison, not a Duo vs Fold8 test
  • Apple says a vapor chamber cools the Duo's A20 Pro for demanding tasks and games (Apple)
  • The chip, steady thermals and the feel of unfolding the screen are what make the Duo look worth it to me
  • One caution: a pre-release unit reportedly got very hot during 4K recording and editing, with no measured temperatures (The Mac Observer)
  • If your phone becomes your editing studio, wait for retail-unit heat tests

It still feels a little in-between

Spec table comparing iPhone Duo and Galaxy Z Fold8 on price, chip, screens, thickness, weight, video playback and storage

Source: Apple specs, Samsung US; each maker's own battery test

  • At 254 g, the Duo is 53 g heavier than the 201 g Fold8
  • Closed, it is 11.3 mm thick, 1.6 mm thicker than the Fold8
  • There is no Face ID, so you unlock it with Touch ID in the side button
  • Apple Pencil support is listed as coming later this year, so the note-taking pitch is not complete on day one
  • In return you get up to 2TB of storage and Apple's rating of up to 31 hours of video on the inner screen
  • That mix is why it feels in-between: too heavy to be an easy phone, too new to replace an iPad yet
If you are... My take
A US iPhone user curious about foldables Worth buying; the $100 premium over the Fold8 is small
A Galaxy Fold user in Korea Stay put; the Duo costs about 44% more there
Someone who edits 4K video on the phone Wait for retail heat tests first
Waiting for the Fold9 Watch whether Samsung answers on chip speed and sustained performance

The Fold9 has homework now

  • I will keep buying Folds, but the Duo came out more competitive than I expected
  • Samsung still wins on weight and thickness, and the gap is not small
  • What it should worry about is the A20 Pro's lead in sustained GPU speed
  • If the Fold9 gets better cooling and keeps its home-market pricing, Fold users have little reason to switch
  • If it does not, Apple's $100 premium looks easier to pay each year

Community Reactions

  • One Hacker News commenter noted the Duo is priced close to the Samsung Fold8 with similar dimensions, but still preferred the Fold8's square edges (Hacker News)
  • Another was surprised by $1,999 after reports of up to $2,500 and called it price competitive with other foldables (Hacker News)
  • A long-time Galaxy Fold user simply called foldables the future (Hacker News)
  • Others pushed back on paying $2,000 for a phone at all (Hacker News)

Q&A (Field Notes)

  • Q. When can I buy it?
    • Preorders open October 16 at 5 a.m. PT in the US and at 9 p.m. the same day in Korea, with sales starting October 23 in both
  • Q. Is the A20 Pro in the Duo the same as in the iPhone 18 Pro?
    • Apple lists the same chip, and my iPhone 18 Pro gaming post covers what it does in games, but the Duo's own sustained results still need testing
  • Q. Is the crease gone?
    • Apple says its display layers glide to minimize the crease, which is not the same as no crease, so check it in a store
  • Q. Should a Fold8 owner switch?
    • Only if you want iOS badly; the Duo is heavier and thicker, and in Korea it costs far more
